Act-On Software

Required Technical Setup

For your Act-On account to function correctly, make sure you configure these important settings.

  • You will need action from your IT staff, web hosting provider, and email provider
  • You will also need to contact Act-On support
  • You may need to wait for responses during this process, so it is critical to get started as soon as possible

Some of these settings affect your email sending ability, and others enable you to track website visitors.

Email Setup

These steps are critical to email deliverability. Without these settings in place, spam filters are likely to treat your marketing messages as suspicious.

Email From Setup

When you pick email addresses to use as the 'From' on your messages, the domain for each one must be specially configured and authenticated to work for this purpose. For example, if you send from info@company.com and sales@ourcompany.net, complete this setup for company.com and ourcompany.net.

Every time you add a From address with a new domain, you must complete this setup for that domain.

You must enable Sender Policy Framework (SPF) for each Email From domain to let Act-On send emails on your behalf.

  1. Choose the addresses you want use as From addresses on your messages (eg., marketing@company.com, janesmith@ourcompany.com, info@company.net) and make a list of the domains
  2. Add the From addresses in Act-On

Next, work with your mail or IT team to:
  3. For each domain (bolded in examples above) create a new TXT record under the DNS of the domain:
    • v=spf1 include:_spf.act-on.net -all
  4. Continue the process below

Important: Setup is not finished until all steps below are complete.

You must enable DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) for each Email From domain to let Act-On use it as From label on your messages.

  1. Gather the list of domains you are using for your From addresses (the same list used above)
  2. From the Start page in Act-On, locate your Account ID (in the Account section, next to your Account Name)
  3. For each domain: Work with your IT to create a new CNAME entry in your DNS:
    • Name or Host: (AOAccountID)aoauth._domainkey
    • Value or Points To: dkim.act-on.com
      dns3.PNG
      • See Editing Your DNS to Implement DKIM for detailed steps to create this entry
      • For multiple accounts: Please use your parent account's ID for the CNAME entry on all child accounts
  4. Continue the process below

Important: Setup is not finished until all steps below are complete.

After setting up SPF and DKIM for your Email From domain, contact our support team using the links below to complete the process.

Support will reply to confirm that setup is complete.

It's important to set up an email marketing sub-domain (eg., mailer.company.com) with required security settings.

The Envelope Domain is not the same as the Email From address. Instead, it is used for message routing and appears in the header of the email:
clipboard_e4ad014cddf26718f1b4d9691c1f916b0.png

This domain must be specially set up for this purpose, which is a one-time process per Act-On account.

You must enable Sender Policy Framework (SPF) for this domain to let Act-On send emails on your behalf.

Work with your mail or IT team to:

  1. Create the sub-domain (eg., mailer.company.com) for your email envelope
    • If you have multiple domains, choose the one with the healthiest email reputation
  2. Create two new records under the DNS of this sub-domain:
    1. TXT record:
      v=spf1 include:_spf.act-on.net -all
    2. MX record that points to:
      est-mta.b2b-mail.net (priority 10)
  3. Continue the process below

Important: Setup is not finished until all steps below are complete.

After setting up SPF for your Envelope Domain, contact our support team using the links below to complete the process.

Yahoo Feedback Loop

Yahoo's Complaint Feedback Loop service is required to receive and manage spam complaints that come from Yahoo or AOL email addresses.

To register for this service:

  1. Work with your IT to set up a new email alias: postmaster@(yourdomain.com)
    • You will need access to the inbox of this email account
  2. Request a call from our support team using the form below
  3. We will trigger a verification email to this postmaster address - once you open it and provide the verification details, the process is complete

Please log in to make this request.

Our support team will reply soon with next steps.

Verifying Email Setup

You can verify that SPF, DKIM, and Envelope From: have been completed by sending a test email to an external Gmail account. In the options menu for this message, select Show Original:

spf-dkim-check-1.jpg

In the headers of the message, you will be able to see if SPF and DKIM passed.

You can also validate your SPF record at http://www.kitterman.com/spf/validate.html.

Website Tracking Setup

These steps will enable you to drive traffic to your website and analyze visitor data. Without these settings in place, your forms and landing pages may not be visible to your customers.

Custom Domain and SSL Certificate

You will need a custom marketing domain with an SSL certificate to host your Act-On pages and content. Web pages without SSL enabled will show security warnings in most modern browsers.

Add a Custom Marketing Domain

A custom marketing domain lets you use your company name in the URLs for Act-On content (forms, landing pages, etc.) instead of a generic Act-On-generated address. If you want a new domain to use for Act-On content, you can purchase it at the hosting provider of your choice.

Note: Custom marketing domains cannot include special characters such as underscores.

To connect your custom domain to Act-On:

  1. Login to your Act-On account
  2. Go to Content > Branding > Domain
  3. Highlight the Default Marketing Domain and copy it to use below
  4. Have your IT or domain host create a CNAME called "marketing" or "info"
  5. Point the CNAME to the Default Marketing Domain that you copied
  6. Go to Content > Branding > Domain, click Edit, then add your newly created CNAME

Important: Your new domain is not secured. An SSL certificate must be added via the steps below.

Add an SSL Certificate

This certificate is required to reach your audience – without it, your content will be blocked by most web browsers. Even if you have SSL configured elsewhere already, you will need a new certificate to add to your Act-On domain. This will also allow to track visit data on web pages secured via HTTPS.

Here's the process to add or update a certificate:

  1. Provide some company information to Act-On Support (see below)
  2. Support will reply with a certificate signing request (CSR)
  3. Buy an SSL certificate from the provider of your choice
Note: The certificate needs to be non-wildcard and either an OV, DV, or EV SSL certificate for an Apache HTTP server
  4. Send the certificate details to Act-On Support so it can be installed on your marketing domain

If you are renewing a certificate and have your previous CSR from Act-On, you can skip the CSR request steps, buy the certificate, and contact support with the certificate details.

Request a CSR

Please log in to submit your request.

Act-On Support will follow up with you to continue the installation.

Technical Details

The technology that Act-On uses to support 'https' pages when hosting a certificate is Transport Layer Security (TLS SNI). Below is a list of browsers that currently support TLS SNI:

  • Opera 8.0 and later (the TLS 1.1 protocol must be enabled)
  • Internet Explorer 7 or later (under Windows Vista and later only, not under Windows XP)
  • Firefox 2.0 or later
  • Curl 7.18.1 or later (when compiled against an SSL/TLS toolkit with SNI support)
  • Chrome 6.0 or later (on all platforms – releases up to 5.0 only on specific OS versions)
  • Safari 3.0 or later (under OS X 10.5.6 or later and under Windows Vista and later)

Act-On Beacon Tracker

The Beacon Tracker is the tool within Act-On that collects information on visitors to your website.
