Set up technical requirements

As a new Act-On customer, it is very important to complete this list of technical setup actions. They will accelerate your onboarding process and help you maximize your return on investment.

Most of these steps require action from your IT staff, domain host, or email provider. You will also need to contact Act-On support. The process can take several days, so we recommend starting as soon as possible.

This lets you send Act-On emails to yourself (necessary for testing messages) without triggering your spam filters.

To do:

Ask your IT or email provider (e.g., Gmail) to:

  1. Whitelist the domains & IP addresses below
  2. Exempt the same domains/IP addresses and your corporate From Addresses from your "spoofing" rules.

Separately, you may want to ignore certain IP addresses (such as internal ones) to keep them from skewing your data.

Office 365 users

The IP range may be rejected by the Office 365 Admin Center. If this happens, you can use the four following ranges as the equivalent:


This allows Act-On to feed qualified leads to your sales team. If you don't use a CRM, skip this step.

To do:

  1. Click Settings and select Connectors.
  2. Click the CRM menu and choose your CRM from the list.
  3. Follow the steps to complete the connection.

Technical users: If your CRM is not supported, you can develop your own integration.

This allows Act-On to send emails on your behalf.

To do:

Ask your IT team to:

  1. Create an SPF record in your DNS that describes all authorized senders for your domain
    SPF for Google Hosted Email
    SPF for Outlook Hosted Email
    (If you have an existing SPF record, skip to Step 2)
  2. Add Act-On as an authorized sender by adding "" to your record before "-all"

This ensures that URLs for Act-On content (forms, landing pages, etc.) include your name and brand for a consistent customer experience.

To do:

  1. Login to your Act-On account 
  2. Go to Content > Branding > Domain
  3. Copy the Default Marketing Domain
  4. Have your IT or domain host create a CNAME called "marketing" or "info"
  5. Point the CNAME to the Default Marketing Domain that you copied
  6. Go to Content > Branding > Domain, click Edit and add your newly-created CNAME
  7. Click Beacon Tracking Code after adding your CNAME and apply the given code to the footer of your website

Add an SSL certificate

This is critical for online trust, and lets you:

  • Track activity on HTTPS-secured pages
  • Link to Act-On content from HTTPS-secured pages
  • Display HTTPS on your Act-On pages

To do:

  1. Contact support by clicking here  (or clicking here for a pre-filled email).
    • Fill in the required information:
      Country Name (two-letter code) – Example: US
      State or Province Name (full name) – Example: California
      Locality Name (city) – Example: Roseville
      Organization Name (company) – Example: ABC Company
      Organizational Unit Name (section) – Example: Marketing department
      Common Name (Note: this must be the exact Custom Marketing Domain) – Example:
      My email address – Example:
  2. Act-On support will reply to you with a Certificate Signing Request (CSR)
  3. Take the CSR to the certificate authority of your choice to obtain an SSL certificate
    • Note: The certificate needs to be non-wildcard and either an OV, DV, or EV SSL certificate for an Apache HTTP server

After you have the SSL certificate: 

  1. Contact support again by clicking here (or clicking here for a pre-filled email).
    • Provide the required information:
      The SSL certificate for the sub-domain (e.g., that your organization was issued by the certificate authority
      The intermediate SSL certificates as provided by the certificate authority
  2. Act-On will confirm via email once the certificate is hosted for your sub-domain.

This builds and maintains your reputation as a responsible sender of emails.

To do:

  1. From the Start page, locate your Act-On account ID (next to your username under Account). 
  2. Ask your IT administrator to create the CNAME entry in your corporate DNS
    and point it to
  3. Set up an email alias using postmaster@.

    Note: The next steps are time-sensitive and must be followed carefully.
  4. Contact Act-On support to schedule the Yahoo verification. Make sure you have access to view postmaster@ during the call.
  5. Support will call you, then trigger a verification email to you from Yahoo.
  6. Provide the verification code to support to complete the activation.

Agency customers: Please use your parent account's ID for the CNAME entry on all child accounts.

This helps establish your reputation as a responsible sender of emails.

Work with your mail or IT team to complete these steps:

  1. Decide on a new sub-domain to be used for your new Envelope From: domain email headers (i.e.,
  2. Create a TXT record under the new sub-domain: v=spf1 -all
    • This sets the SPF policy for the newly created sub-domain only, separate from the SPF steps above.
  3. Add an MX record for the new sub-domain and point it to (priority 10).
  4. Contact support by clicking here (or clicking here for a pre-filled email):
    • Provide the required information:
      Subject line: "Envelope From: Ready for Config"
      Sub-domain used
      Act-On account ID
      Contact information to reach out for further questions
  5. Support will reply to confirm that setup is complete

Please note:

Only use one sending domain per Act-On instance. If you have multiple domains, choose the one with the healthiest reputation.
