Editing your DNS to Implement DKIM

AUDIENCE: Administrators, Marketing Users, IT Team
OBJECTIVES: Learn to edit your DNS to include a DKIM record.

In order to implement DKIM, you will need to edit your DNS to include a DKIM record that is provided to you by your Onboarding Manager.

Below are the steps to add the DKIM record to GoDaddy, Bluehost, HostGator, and Network Solutions.

In order to implement your DKIM key or TXT record in GoDaddy there are a couple steps to follow to access the DNS zone for GoDaddy.

  • Log into your account you have with GoDaddy.
  • Once logged in, direct your way to the Domains UI and click Launch.
  • Once in your domains area, click on the domain you would like to implement your DKIM record.
  • Once in the domain you selected, click the DNS Zone File tab.
  • Click on ADD record.
  • Select the type of record and input the information that your CSM has provided you.
  • Once you click Finish, you will need to click Save Changes in order to make sure the record you just created, does in fact implement into your DNS zone area.

Once the new record is saved, it may take up to 24 hours for it to fully propagate so that DKIM can be completed in Act-On.

Note: The HOST record will be specific to your account number, so your DKIM record your CSM provides will look similar to this with a different number at the front. With GoDaddy you do not have to input the domain after the .domainkey since GoDaddy already will recognize the domain that you select.

In order to implement your DKIM key, or TXT record in BlueHost there are a couple steps to follow to access the DNS zone for BlueHost.

  • Log into your account you have with BlueHost.
  • Once logged in, direct your way to Domain Management and click on DNS Zone Editor.
  • Once in your domains area, click on the drop down menu and select the domain you would like to implement your DKIM record and fill in the following information:
    • The Host Record - Will be the DKIM record your CSM provides for you.
    • TTL - Time to Live dictates how long in seconds other servers should cache the record for. For example, a TTL of 3600 will represent an hour.
    • TYPE - Click the drop down menu and select CNAME.
    • Points To: - Will be the server we need to point that record to.
  • If the underscore isn’t acceptable in BlueHost, then we will need to use a TXT record type in that case. Your CSM will provide you with the TXT record for you.
    • Host Record - Will be the DKIM record your CSM provides for you.
    • TTL - Time to Live dictates how long in seconds other servers should cache the record for. For example, a TTL of 3600 will represent an hour.
    • TYPE - Click the drop down menu and select TXT.
    • TXT Value - Will be a strand of text and number values.
  • Click Add Record

Once that process is done, it may take up to 24 hours for the new record to fully propagate so that DKIM can be completed in Act-On.

With BlueHost, you do not have to input the domain after the .domainkey since BlueHost already will recognize the domain that you select.

In order to implement your DKIM key, or TXT record in HostGator there are a couple steps to follow to access the DNS zone for HostGator.

  • Log into your account you have with HostGator.
  • Once logged in, direct your way to Domains and click on Advanced DNS Zone Editor.
  • Once in your domains area, click on the drop down menu and select the domain you would like to implement your DKIM record.
  • Fill in the following information:
    • The Host Record (Name) - will be the DKIM record your CSM provides for you.
    • TTL - Time to Live dictates how long in seconds other servers should cache the record for. For example, a TTL of 3600 will represent an hour.
    • TYPE - Click the drop down menu and select CNAME.
    • Address - Will be the server we need to point that record to.
  • Click Add Record

If the underscore isn’t acceptable in HostGator, then we will need to use a TXT record type. Your CSM will provide you with the TXT record for you.

  • Fill in the following information:
    • The Host Record (Name) - will be the DKIM record your CSM provides for you.
    • TTL - Time to Live dictates how long in seconds other servers should cache the record for. For example, a TTL of 3600 will represent an hour.
    • TYPE - Click the drop down menu and select TXT.
    • TXT Data - will be a strand of text and number values.
  • Click Add Record

Once that process is done, it may take up to 24 hours for the new record to propagate so that DKIM can be completed in Act-On.

Note: The HOST key will be specific to your account number, so your DKIM record your CSM provides will look similar to this with a different number at the front. With HostGator you do not have to input the domain after the .domainkey since HostGator already will recognize the domain that you select.
Note: Network Solutions does not allow underscores in CNAME type records. Tell your Onboarding Manager if you are using Network Solutions so that they can provide a TXT type record to you instead.

In order to implement your DKIM key, or TXT record in Network Solutions there are a couple steps to follow to access the DNS zone for Network Solutions.

  • Log into your account you have with Network Solutions
  • Once logged in, direct your way to My Domain Names and click on Edit DNS.
  • Once in your DNS area, click on the domain you would like to implement your DKIM record. Once in the domain you selected, click on the EDIT DNS tab.
  • Next you will need to click on the Manage Advanced DNS Records.
  • Next find the Text (TXT Records) area.
  • Click on Edit TXT records and enter in the TXT area.
    • Host: The host will be the record that your CSM will provide for you such as in this case 13048aoauth._domainkey.yourdomain.com (Note: You do not need to include your domain in the "Host" field).
    • Text: The Text area will be the TXT record your CSM provides as well and will look something like this:
k=rsa;
p=MIGfMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBAQUAA4GNADCBiQKBgQC2j1MGq5hvFNKYM6WK3EX9R97A2Ca65hR6rC4H9D1c30Wy2a94sLbz7D33KcAaSXeuRqyP

  • Once that has been placed, click on the Save or NEXT button at the bottom. A new window will pop up make sure to click Save Changes otherwise the new records that were added, will not be placed into the DNS.
  • After saving, you’re done. This will take anywhere from 4 hours to 24 hours to propagate through the internet.  Once Act-On can see that the host is pointing to the correct TXT record, your Onboarding Manager can activate DKIM your account.
