OBJECTIVES: Learn how to edit the text version of an email message in the email composer
When a message is sent from Act-On, there are two versions sent within the same message, an HTML version and a text version. (Note: The recipient's email client will render either the HTML version or the text version. The recipient will not receive two separate messages).
Before sending a message, it is important to remember to format and test the plain text version of the message in addition to the HTML version.
To Edit the Text Version of a Message:
- While in the message composer, navigate to the Design step and click Plain Text Version.
- The Edit Plain Text Version window will appear.
Click the Generate From HTML button to render the plain text version of your current HTML message automatically. It is especially important to do this if you make edits to a commonly-reused template (e.g., a newsletter) for regular message sends.
Click Save when you are finished editing.
Things to Remember:
- Note that if you have begun to edit the text version, clicking the Generate From HTML button will cause it to revert to an exact plain text rendering of your current HTML version.
- It is a good idea to read through the text version to get a sense of how the message flows before making changes. The text version often needs to be reworked because of hidden hyperlinked content from the HTML version that is displayed in the text version.
- It's important to remember that a plain text message has the same CANSPAM requirements as the HTML version. It must include a valid opt-out link and the valid postal address so that recipients can send a notice of opt-out to by mail. Your address can be your current physical street address, PO Box, or a private mailbox as long as they are registered with the US Postal Service. Users can enter the postal address or use the valid personalization fields for the company’s name and the account’s valid business address.
