Capturing Referrer and Search Terms

AUDIENCE: Administrators, Marketing Users
OBJECTIVES:

  • Define the form system fields that are captured with every form submission
  • Outline the necessary steps to capture referrer and search terms in form submissions

Whenever a form is submitted, the following information can now be captured to help you gain additional information about your visitors:

  • _REFERRER – This is the raw referring URL that brought a visitor to your form
  • _SEARCH – This is the search term used
  • _CAMPAIGN – If you choose to generate multiple public URLs to track unique traffic sources to your form, the _CAMPAIGN field will display the Campaign name assigned to a particular URL. For example, you may tag the URL associated with your paid search campaign as 'Adwords.' This value would then show in the _CAMPAIGN field.

If you are using the Push Signups to Salesforce setting in your form, which allows registrations to be pushed immediately to Salesforce, you can also pass the Referring URL, search terms, and Campaign name to Salesforce with the following steps:

  • Create a new form or edit an existing form
  • Insert a Hidden Field.
  • In the Field Name column, enter the name of the custom field in Salesforce where you would like to capture the referring URL. (You will want to enter the display name of your Salesforce field, rather than the ID.) In the Field Value field, type {{form.referrer}}.
  • Repeat the step above to create a hidden field to capture the search terms, using the hidden field value ((form.search)), and create a hidden field to capture the Campaign name using the hidden field value {{form.campaign}}.
  • Click Next twice.
  • Click Save.

Referring sites and search terms associated with each form and landing page visit are also available as part of your overall Website Visitor Tracking report.

Note::  For existing forms created before this new feature was available, simply edit and save each form to have these new fields appended to your form's signup list and start capturing this information.
