Gated Content

Gated content is when media assets (e.g. whitepapers, case studies, eBooks) are ‘hidden’ until a user submits a form. This allows you to leverage your valuable content as a way to gather data on your prospects.

Once a prospect completes your form, they can access the gated media assets until their cookie expires. If you use progressive profiling to gate your content, prospects will be shown the form on future visits until they’ve completed all your progressive questions.

It is on our roadmap to add a Grace Period feature. You will be able to set a time frame when the prospect can access gated content in a dynamic form without being shown additional questions.

Key Features

  • Included in the Form Composer
  • Compatible with forms embedded in Act-On Landing Pages and on external pages
  • Supports standard form redirects (so you can show users a thank you page in addition to the content download)

Benefits

  • Generate more ‘self-qualified’ inbound leads with content relevant to their needs
  • Gain personalized insights to customize your lead nurturing
  • Use with dynamic forms to collect more information each time a prospect visits

Retrieve Gated Content URLs

Please note: Gated Content URLs are different for forms embedded in Act-On landing pages than those embedded externally. Check the relevant steps below for how to get the URL.

Gated URL from Act-On Landing Page

  1. Once you’ve completed and saved your form, click the Embed tab and create a new Landing Page or edit an existing one – you will enter the Landing Page Composer

    • If you have multiple forms on the same landing page, they will be listed in the order they were added, with each piece of associated content listed below
You can also access your Gated Content URLs using the ‘Get Public URLs’ option in the Landing Page and Forms listing pages.
  4. Copy the URL for the correct form and content
  5. Use this URL to link to your Gated Content

Gated URL from External Page

  1. Once you’ve completed and saved your Form, select the Embed tab and go to the External Pages section.
  2. In the External Page URLs tab, add the URL of the page where your form will be embedded in order to declare the domain.

3. Navigate to the Gated Content URLs tab of the External Pages slideout and add the full URL path of the page where your form will be embedded (e.g. https://example.com/fullpath/example/).

Notes:

  • The Gated Content URLs section only appears after you have added the gated content to the form - see steps above.
  • Gated Content links will be generated from the URL you enter in this section. Be sure to add the full address (not just the domain) to ensure your visitors are sent to the right page.

4. Once you've added the full URL of the page where your form will be embedded, copy the Gated Content URL that Act-On provides and use this link in your Call to Actions to direct users to the Gated Content page once the form has been embedded on your external page.

Note: If there are multiple pieces attached to your form a distinct URL will be shown for each – copy the appropriate URL to link to that piece of content.

5. To embed the form on your external page navigate to the Embed Code tab, copy the provided Javascript embed code and add it to your page.

Please Note: Due to restrictions on forcing content downloads on iOS devices the Response page will not be shown for forms that are completed on these devices. Instead, the visitor will be redirected to the content where they can manually initiate a download.
