Gate your PDF content

 

Premium content can be a great lead generation tool. This premium content should be gated behind a form on your website or landing page and require some very basic prospect information in exchange for the PDF download of your content.

When prospects visit your website and click on a gated content URL, they will be asked to fill out and submit a registration form before they can access the underlying content. They get cookied in the process, and will not need to register again if they click on the gated content URL in the future.

  1. Identify your premium content that you would like to gate.

All of your content should be valuable, but you should spend some time and resources developing at least one new piece of premium content every one to two months. This content should be highly valuable to your prospects, so remember that quality is always more important than quantity. If a prospect is going to give you their contact information, they are going to expect to get something of value in return!

  1. Create a new form to capture your prospects information. Out of the box, creating a new Act-On form will give you the recommended basic fields.

When it comes to creating a form for your gated content, try to keep it simple and ask the basics:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Email address

You can always gather more info from your prospect using Progressive Profiling, but for this project we are trying to keep it simple. Get the prospects info in exchange for your content, and gain a new known visitor on your list at the same time.

After your form has been created we will need to associate it with your gated PDF.

  1. Follow the guide below to associate your PDF with a form
  2. Copy the unique URL that was generated to your clipboard. We will need this in Step 4.

Since gated content is hidden behind a form, we will need to deploy the form so you can start collecting your prospects information. 

  1. Determine where and how you will be deploying your form. There are four ways to integrate an Act-On form into your website:
  • The External Post Method will allow you to use your own form while keeping the benefits of using an Act-On form.
  • Iframe the form onto your your website/landing page/blog.
  • Link to the form directly from your website/hidden behind a call-to-action button.
  • Insert the Act-On forms HTML code directly onto your website/blog/landing page

If you want people to be able to go on your website and fill out the form in-order to download gated content, you must integrate the form into your site using one of the 4 methods to the left.

To Do:


  1. View the form report for the form you associated with your gated content. You will be able to track the views and submits your forms content received.

Act-On will display detailed statistics relating to the form including traffic and submissions. The form report will show graphical representations of views and submissions as well as statistical data related to the promotion of the form.

Using A/B testing you will be able to split test your forms to find the best combination of content and required fields.
